Workshops & Events 2008/2009

Our workshops are about enabling individuals to free their creative energy, something that often gets trampled on during our lives. Liberating this energy allows people to reconnect to their inner spirit and feel revived, re-energized and centred. This means that even a day course can give you that mini retreat you need.

All the course facilitators and therapists are hand picked not only for their skills as tutors but for the people they are and the gifts they bring to enrich our lives.

In the calm of this private, rural retreat setting, you will truly find nourishment for mind, body and soul.

Introduce a friend to South Dornaford by bringing them to any September event and get your own place half price.
(Excludes meals)

Grow further! Astrid Schroeder
Effective psychological tools for everyday living!

This course is all about enhancing your life, about creating opportunities for growth, greater fulfilment and choice. It is for anyone who would like to find out more about what makes them tick and shapes their lives, as well as about how to use that knowledge for their benefit. At its core, this course is about exploring a few of the fundamental psychological aspects that shape our lives and therefore also have the potential for producing the greatest enhancements in our lives.

This includes
- how we ‘frame’ our experiences, i.e. how we interpret the world around us – because it is not what happens to us that is important, but how we respond to what happens to us
- developing skills and insights into how we can address difficulties in our lives, i.e. learning to distinguish between what we can change and cannot change, how to create change and how to be more at ease with those things we cannot change
- exploring practices that enhance life, such as being mindful, engaging in meditation, looking after and listening to our bodies
- learning skills that can enhance our relationships, both with ourselves and others, through the way we communicate and relate
- examining and exploring what gives our lives meaning, what we value and how to live our lives in line with these values

Drawing on a range of methods derived from positive psychology, the course will set you on a road of self-discovery and provide you with a broad set of life-enhancing tools for use in your everyday life. Because, it is not what happens to us, but the way we respond to what happens to us that matters ...

“Dornaford 5 Rhythms Dancefest”

Two days of sheer dance indulgence. A perfect opportunity for people who love to move to indulge their passion. Or maybe you are looking to start your dance journey and discover a part of yourself that’s longing to be expressed. Here at South Dornaford there is space to dance indoors or in a wonderful variety of places outside. Either a courtyard surrounded by beautiful old buildings or kick your shoes off and feel the grass beneath your feet and dance by the river or in the shade of ancient oak trees. We will be dancing and exploring not just the 5Rhythms but also

Circle Dance, poetry, collage and theatre - not to mention sitting round a fire in the evenings, perhaps even dancing round a fire... Gabrielle Roth's 5 Rhythms are an exhilarating and liberating approach to the exploration of improvised movement and dance that is authentic, inspired and therapeutic. The 5 Rhythms are flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. As you move the rhythms change , echoing patterns that exist in nature and together they become are a map which can take you on a developmental journey, opening you to the inherent wisdom, creativity and energy of your body. Circle Dance is probably the oldest known dance formation and it is an ancient tradition common to many cultures across the earth. Since dancing in a circle strengthens group connection and encourages togetherness it is often used to mark special occasions. In the UK, Bernhard Wosien introduced circle dance to the Findhorn Community in Scotland and his inspiration led to a resurgence of this form of dance, sometimes called sacred circle dance. The dances can be lively and energetic or gentle and reflective. The aim always is to experience the joy of dancing with others and to create a sense of well-being and community.

Being outside at this time of year we can be inspired by the glory of summer. The fullness of the trees , the beauty of the water, the length of the days. We can use the Rhythms to move and open us, so that all the other creative forms can shine a light on our endlessly artistic and expressive selves, without judgement or criticism.

It promises to be the best opportunity to share dance, food, fire and stories, in the heart of summer, with other like-minded souls. Just on the off-chance that the weather is inclement, we will be doing all of this indoors, and candles will stand in for fire...

The form of the days should be something like this: arrive, settle in, eat, fire, dance, sleep; eat, dance, art, eat, meander, dance, art, eat, fire, share, sleep; eat, dance, art, eat, meander, share, leave.

Details: 4pm on Monday to 4pm Wednesday Meals: We put a lot of love and effort into providing good home-cooked and where possible home grown vegetarian meals. Driftwood Art with Basil

Have you ever looked at a piece of driftwood on the beach and thought that’s just beautiful, I’d like to take it home and make something with it? Have you thought of combining the natural art you’ve just found with your own creative talents to produce a finished item?

Well here at South Dornaford we don’t have the sea but we do have a river which brings us many drifting gifts. Some very ugly like plastic bags and others more intriguing, misshapen bits of metal, glass, crockery and bleached wood. So these two days, of which you can come to just one or both, are about you exploring the river’s edge, finding items that talk to you and then setting to and turning your ideas into actions to create a personal piece of art.

We’ll guide you around the land first and chat about using what you find, then you’ll have time to go and collect, or rummage through the existing stash of drift objects, work out your ideas and start constructing, painting, bark removing, twisting, tying, knotting or varnishing your art.

We’ll have pictures on display and information on well known artists to inspire you. You can work out your ideas on paper or a blackboard or just get stuck in. If you need help working out how to bring your idea together Basil, artist and woodsman, will be on hand to guide you. We’ll provide accessories to help you make your artwork so you just need to bring your imagination.

Places cost £25 per day. Bring your own sandwiches for lunch. Hot soup and teas/ coffees will be available for you to buy. The event runs from 10 - 5pm.
