Tai Chi Chuan, or Tai Chi as it more commonly known, comes from China and is a slow moving meditation which helps to bring balance to body, mind and soul.
The slow speed of the movements disguises the fact that Tai Chi is also a martial art based on soft power. These two aspects of Tai Chi work by tuning in to “chi” or lifeforce energy.
In my classes students practise this firstly through freeing up, relaxation and raising the awareness of tension in our bodies. They also physically explore grounding, alignment, use of breath, sensing and intention.
Tai Chi players continuosly refine these skills, and other, on deeper levels as their understanding and experience of the topic grows. Predominantly students learn solo forms to begin with and progress into partner forms such as Da Lu and the faster San Shou. There are also weapon forms, in addition to the open or empty hand forms which use fans, staff, longsword or broadsword.
